Disclosure: We sell our own digital products on Gumroad and Payhip and make free tools for sellers. One of the options below is our own spreadsheet, a few paid kits are linked at the end, and we earn the sale price if you buy one. We have no partnership with Wave or Intuit and aren’t paid for any other link.

If you sell templates, ebooks or presets on Gumroad, your bookkeeping problem is a little unusual. Gumroad takes its fees before it pays you, so the deposit that lands in your bank is the net amount. Your 1099-K and your Schedule C start from gross sales, and the fees are a deductible expense. Bank-feed accounting software only sees the deposit. So whatever you pick, you’ll still need Gumroad’s sales export to split each payout into gross sales, fees and refunds.

We read Wave’s pricing page, QuickBooks Solopreneur’s plan page and the QuickBooks Payments rates page on October 20, 2026, and left out limited-time promotions. Prices change, so check the linked pages before you sign up.

The short version

  • Cheapest for a Gumroad-only seller: a spreadsheet that reads your Gumroad sales CSV. Ours, the Gumroad Seller Finance Tracker, is pay what you want from $9 and splits gross sales, Gumroad fees, card processing and refunds into a profit and loss sheet with a tax set-aside.
  • Free real accounting software: Wave Starter is $0 with unlimited invoices, estimates, bills and bookkeeping records, but you enter or match bank transactions yourself.
  • If you want your bank to import itself: Wave Pro at $19 a month or $190 a year adds automatic bank import, auto-categorizing and unlimited receipt capture.
  • If you track mileage or want TurboTax tie-ins: QuickBooks Solopreneur has a free plan with tight monthly caps, Lite at $10 a month and Simple Start at $19 a month.

What it costs over a year: one worked example

A seller with Gumroad sales only, one business bank account, about 15 expense receipts a month and no client invoices:

Option Year-one software cost What you still do by hand
Spreadsheet (our tracker) $9 (minimum price) paste the Gumroad CSV and bank expenses each month
Wave Starter $0 enter each payout and expense; split payouts into sales and fees
Wave Pro $190 yearly ($228 billed monthly) split payouts into sales and fees
QuickBooks Solopreneur Free $0, but 15 receipts a month is over its 2-receipt cap not a fit here
QuickBooks Solopreneur Lite $120 ($10 × 12) split payouts into sales and fees
QuickBooks Solopreneur Simple Start $228 ($19 × 12) split payouts into sales and fees (no Gumroad connection)

If you also freelance and get paid by card through invoices, the per-payment fee matters a little. Four $250 card payments a month cost $31.40 in fees on Wave Starter (4 × ($7.25 + $0.60)), $29.90 through QuickBooks Payments (4 × $7.475) and $29.00 on Wave Pro. Pro saves about $28.80 a year over Starter on fees, far less than its $190 price, so pick Pro for the bank import and receipts, not the card rate.

Who each one is best for

  • Spreadsheet: Gumroad-first sellers with a handful of expenses who mainly need clean gross sales, fees and refunds for tax time. It’s also the easiest to hand to an accountant.
  • Wave Starter: sellers who also send client invoices and want free invoicing plus real books, and don’t mind entering transactions.
  • Wave Pro: anyone with dozens of bank transactions a month who wants them imported and categorized.
  • QuickBooks Solopreneur Lite or Simple Start: sellers who drive for work, want built-in mileage tracking, or plan to file with TurboTax’s expert help.

The honest downsides

  • Spreadsheet: nothing is automatic; you export and paste each month. No invoicing, no bank connection, and you keep receipts yourself.
  • Wave Starter: no automatic bank import, and receipt capture is a paid add-on.
  • Wave Pro: the $0 fixed card fee only covers the first 10 card payments each month; after that it’s 2.9% + $0.60 again.
  • QuickBooks Solopreneur Free: 2 invoices, 2 receipts and 5 mileage trips a month is very tight. The plan page lists monthly prices only, and Intuit often runs introductory offers, so check the price you’ll pay after any discount ends.
  • QuickBooks Solopreneur Simple Start: the “connect 1 sales channel” feature covers stores like Shopify, Amazon, eBay and Etsy. Gumroad isn’t on QuickBooks’ list of sales-channel connectors.
  • All three apps: none of them reads Gumroad’s sales export as far as we found, so the deposit-is-net problem stays with you.

How to choose in two minutes

  1. All your income comes from Gumroad and you have few expenses: start with a spreadsheet.
  2. You also invoice clients: add Wave Starter for free invoicing.
  3. More than about 30 bank transactions a month, or you hate typing them: Wave Pro or QuickBooks Solopreneur Lite.
  4. You track business mileage: QuickBooks Solopreneur Lite.
